UNIR is a very democratic party- Christophe Tchao

©Afreepress-(Lomé, August 22, 2017)- The Chairman of the UNIR parliamentary group, Christophe Tchao, was the guest of the radio newspaper Victoire Fm on Monday. The deputy gave his opinion on the events of 19th August, 2017 and denounced the attitude of the organizers of the Saturday demonstration which, he said, persisted in following an itinerary forbidden by the Ministers of Security and Territorial Administration.

"It is not by saying well go through this road that we will necessarily ensure success in your manifestation. It is what you are going to put out as a claim and the mobilization behind your march that is important, "he said. The security forces are not there to violate those who walk. They are there to ensure that those who walk can do so in peace", he added. He denounced the attacks and violence perpetrated against the security forces which caused injuries in their ranks and the loss of working weapons.

The process leading to political, constitutional and institutional reforms is on track, he said. "Everyone has to take a step towards the other. It is necessary that on both sides, each one takes a step towards the other taking into consideration, the interest of the people, the interest of the country, "he said. We cannot just do what we want, the moment we realize we do not have the qualified majority to carry out the reforms," said Christophe Tchao, who said UNIR is a "very democratic" party. "If we have a candidate who is beaten in the ballot box, we will congratulate the winner and we will accompany him in his mission," said Victoire Fm's guest. He went back on the reasons that motivated his party to postpone the march of 19th August, a demonstration that should have taken place at the same time as the PNP.

The party, he said, had plan A and plan B. Plan A consisted of seeing whether it was necessary to storm the streets and plan B was about a possible postponement. Through this event, UNIR also wanted to show that it existed and that it also had the capacity to mobilize crowds in the streets of Lomé, said Christophe Tchao.
