“Among 1,000 children who are born in Togo, 194 die before the age of 5. 61% of children aged 0 to 23 months are underweight and 30% suffer from acute malnutrition. We need to improve these alarming figures and start fighting against diseases affecting little children”, conceived Peter Ataty, the Country Director of Compassion International in Togo.
This is the main goal of the Togolese branch of the Christian NGO "Compassion International" who officially launched last Friday in Lomé its project "Child Survival Program (CSP). The objective of this program is to help reduce to two thirds the mortality rate among children under 5 years and to three quarters the maternal and infant mortality rate. It will also help reduce the spread of HIV / AIDS and malaria prevalence among the mothers and children. For Peter "The work we have to do is to help these children so that the future of Togo is guaranteed forever. This program takes care of children from the womb of their mothers until adult age." Dede Ahouefa Ekoué, the Minister of Social Action, Women's Empowerment and Literacy who took part in the launching ceremony did not stop praising initiators. "In Togo Compassion International’s actions are in accordance with the national priorities, promotion and protection of children rights," she advised. Mrs Ekoué in her speech expressed the government's willingness to work towards the development of children, fighting against all the handicaps that prevent them from coming true. "The government under the leadership of His Excellency Faure Gnassingbé is engaged in a wide range of reforms through a focus on the following three strategic pillars which are: the prevention of situations of vulnerability, support of vulnerable children, monitoring, integrated production and use of information on vulnerable children” she reported. The ceremony was attended by the representative of Compassion International-Africa, representatives of Compassion UK, Compassion Donors from UK, several traditional leaders and distinguished guests.
The Child Survival Program takes into account 212 beneficiaries spread over six projects in the city of Lomé. Compassion International is installed in Togo since 2008 and works in partnership with 89 churches spread in areas of Lomé , Gulf, Zio , Yoto and Vo with a total of more than 19,000 children in care.
