©Afreepress-(Lomé, Saturday 26th August 2017)- The Union for the Republic party (UNIR) will be demonstrating in the streets of Lomé on the 29th, 30th and 31st August, 2017. According to the leaders of the political party, the demonstration was intended to "support the institutions of the Republic and denounce the acts of violence against the security forces in their missions". This announcement was made solemnly on Thursday, 24th August, 2017, after a meeting of the executives of this political group. They gathered from all over the country to Lomé to discuss the recent socio-political events that the country has known.

Gilbert Bawara, who was honored to announce the event to the media, highlighted the goals of the three-day events. "These marches are not meant to oppose anyone because we cultivate the spirit of fraternity, we do not go beyond the political battles to consider us as enemies because we are all Togolese”, he insisted.

These demonstrations, he said, are intended to reaffirm the attachment of the UNIR party and its militants to "democracy and the rule of law". "UNIR wants to firmly support democratic institutions and ensure that the Togolese, wherever they are on the national territory, cultivate unity and fraternity among themselves. It is much more a citizen and republican march, "he said.

For Bawara, the ruling party could not be sensitive when the values ​​of unity and fraternity are undermined in the country by a fringe of the political class.

It should be recalled that Tikpi Atchdam's Pan-African National Party (PNP), the CAP2015 and the Group of 6 have also called on their militants to demonstrate their strength on the streets of Lomé on 30th and 31st August. They are demanding the "immediate and unconditional release" of those arrested during the demonstrations on 19th August, the setting up of a commission of inquiry to set out the responsibilities and bring to justice the perpetrators of the violence on 19th and 20th August 2017, the "immediate" arrest of persecutions, arrests, prosecutions and violence against PNP militants and officials, the "immediate" exercise of the constitutional right of demonstration, the return to the original constitution of 14th October 1992 and the revision of the electoral framework and the establishment of the right to vote for foreigners.
